Workshop only opened their doors to Clerkenwell a few years ago with a simple mission: ‘sourcing, roasting and serving the best coffee possible’. It’s a great ethos and one that’s worked for them: they won ‘Best Independent Café’ at the 2012 Café Society Awards and have been collecting awards for their food too.
The downstairs area is dominated by the roaster and a nice big wooden bar from where you can order drinks to take away. There are communal tables downstairs and upstairs tables are jammed in close together so it’s a social atmosphere, the likes of which is gaining popularity in this stereotypically anti-social city. Coffee comes with glasses of water, which is a welcome touch, and breakfasts are a real highlight.
Try the toasted banana bread with date and orange jam, hazelnuts and espresso mascarpone.
