With free entry, the Museum of London is the best place to head to get a sense of the city past and present.
The collection is huge, with approximately a million items on display and searchable online databases. There are always interesting and varied talks and events going on: for Valentine’s Day why not come late to the Museum’s City of Seduction? There will be dancing, a talk on the philosophy of pleasure, cocktails and a special after-hours viewing of The Cheapside Hoard: London’s Lost Jewels.
This year the museum also opens an exhibition that explores the enduring appeal of Sherlock Holmes, recreating the atmosphere of the London that the detective would have roamed. Who says museums are stuffy?
