You may not know where or how you'll be celebrating Halloween until a few days or even hours before, but it's never too early to start planning what you're going to wear on that frightful Friday night.
Some people can decide on their Halloween costume after barely a moment's thought, while others spend a long time scratching their heads and desperately searching for ideas.
If you fall into the latter category, we may be able to help you out. We've thought up some ideas based on movie and television characters, to help steer you in the right direction...
Silver Screen Villains
In addition to the classic horror film characters such as Count Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and Freddy Krueger, you could dress up as movie villains that aren't necessarily associated with the horror genre.
Hannibal Lecter costumes are fairly simple easy to get hold of, and not too expensive either. If you'd like to step things up a notch, you could dress up as Patrick Bateman from American Psycho – you'll need a suit, a see-through raincoat, some Brylcreem and a bit of fake blood to perfect the look.
Another costume that always goes down well is the Joker from the Batman films. Whether you go for Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger is up to you, but it's the makeup that will make or break your effort – so don't be afraid to ask someone for help applying it.
Staying on the theme of Batman, Catwoman and Poison Ivy are both great options for girls, and the things you'll need to achieve those looks won't be too pricey. Of course, you could buy a ready-made a ready-made costume from a fancy dress shop or online.
Given that over the last few years we've been blessed with quite a few addictive and unforgettable TV series, dressing up as a memorable character could be your perfect costume solution.
Walter White from Breaking Bad in 'Heisenberg' mode is a definite contender for the most recognisable TV character of recent years, and if you do it right there will be no mistaking who you've dressed up as. To mimic his look all you'll need is a pork pie hat, a Harrington jacket, some dark-coloured chinos and a goatee (or a fake one). Alternatively, if there are two of you, yellow jumpsuits and black respirator masks are all you'll need to dress as Walt and Jesse.
Another recent and immensely popular Netflix show, Orange Is the New Black, is set in a women's prison in the US and presents us with some more great costume inspiration. What's more, it's an extremely simple outfit to put together, as orange jumpsuits are easy to come by in specialist fancy dress shops.
