If you're staying in London over the summer this year, or if you're arriving a few weeks before the semester starts, you'll no doubt be eager to make the most of it and enjoy yourself.
As we know, one of the simplest and best ways to have fun is to attend a gig. London's a great city for this, because:
a) It's England's capital and is therefore usually on the agenda of most touring artists and bands
b) It's enormous and has countless great music venues, both big and small
With that in mind, here are four London music events happening in September that are definitely worth checking out:
Gig: Mac DeMarco
If you haven't heard of him before, Mac DeMarco's music is quite accurately described with this five-word phrase: "hazy jangle surf pop rock". He's been around since about 2009, when his self-released EPs got him noticed and eventually signed to Brooklyn NY-based label Captured Tracks.
Anyway, his relaxed sound is perfect for late summer, so early September will be a great time to see him live. And you have two chances to see him in eight days – we hope you can make one of those.
When and where? Tuesday 1st September and Wednesday 9th – both at the Roundhouse. Postcode: NW1 8EH
Gig: Florence + the Machine
It would be fair to say that Florence + the Machine are a worldwide sensation by now, having just headlined Glastonbury. Luckily for you, they're playing London four times over five days in September – though we should hope so, as Florence herself is a native Londoner!
You'll enjoy various smash-hits from their three number-one albums, such as "Dog Days are Over", "Shake It Out" and "Ship to Wreck". We've got a feeling these are going to be pretty special gigs.
When and where? Monday 21st September, Tuesday 22nd, Thursday 24th, and Friday 25th – all at Alexandra Palace. Postcode: N22 7AY
If dance music is more your thing, we suggest you check out Ceremony – a full-day festival with over seven different stages, all showcasing different sub-genres of dance. The festival's aim is to provide a "360° celebration of dance music past, present and future" – which we think sounds quite promising.
The Martinez Brothers are headlining, along with Armand Van Helden (who's going to play a "classic 90s" set), Lee Foss and DJ Sneak. And then you've got over 50 more DJs on top of those.
When and where? Saturday 12th September at Finsbury Park (which is very close to our Highbury accommodation). Postcode: N4 1EE
After the success of the first OnBlackheath music festival last summer, it's returning for a second go this September, again for two days over the weekend.
On the Saturday, Elbow and the Manic Street Preachers are headlining. On the Sunday, Madness and Kelis are playing (yes, that's Kelis whose milkshake brings all the boys to the yard). Quite a mixture, as we're sure you've noticed – but that's all part of the fun. There's something for everyone here, and it's a beautiful part of south-east London that's definitely worth visiting if you haven't already.
When and where? Saturday 12th September and Sunday 13th – on Blackheath, of course! Postcode: SE3 0UA
